What causes clogged pores? Clogged pores or sebaceous acne are a type of non-inflammatory acne that appear as raised bumps on the skin. When touched, they feel rough. They are caused by clogged pores on the skin. Sometimes, the blockage, which we call a pimple head, also protrudes from the outside. There are 2 types:

1. Open clogged pores or blackheads are hard blackheads that can be seen from the outside. In the early stages, the pimple head of a blackhead will appear white or yellow, which is the color of keratin and sebum. However, when the pimple head is exposed to air for a while, it reacts with oxygen in the air and changes color to black.

2. Closed clogged pores or whiteheads are small, white pimples that cannot be seen from the outside. However, when touched, they feel like raised bumps caused by a blockage inside the pore. When bacteria, sebum, and keratin combine, they form cysts. If left untreated, these cysts will continue to grow larger and push the pore wall to burst, into the skin, and cause inflammation, which is the origin of cystic acne.

What causes inflammatory acne? Inflammatory acne is caused by the skin's reaction to foreign substances, which are mainly caused by bacteria called C. acnes. C. acnes has the enzyme lipase that breaks down fats into fatty acids (free fatty acids) that are released outside the skin, causing inflammation. C. acnes also stimulates the secretion of protease cytokines, which also cause inflammation. This type of bacteria is often found in the sebaceous glands and can be divided into 4 main types:

1. Red papules are small red or round red pimples no larger than 0.5 cm. When touched or rubbed on the face, it feels raised and hard under the skin. The skin is not smooth, has no head or pus, and feels slightly painful to the touch. It can be caused by both a bacterial infection mixed with clogged pores or developed from clogged pores that are disturbed by touching, pressing, squeezing, picking, or picking, allowing bacteria to enter the pores that are clogged, causing clogged acne to become inflamed.

2. Pustules are red pimples with a white-yellow spot in the center. It is a pus that occurs under the skin. When touched, it will feel a little painful. Pustules are caused by both bacteria and clogged pores. Or it may develop from blocked pores that are disturbed by touching, picking, squeezing. The only difference is that pustules must be infected for a while until pus forms under the skin.

3. Nodules or large red pimples (Nodule) are large raised bumps. When observed or touched, you will feel that there is a large lump under the skin. When touching the inflamed skin area, it will feel hard like a kidney. The cause of cystic acne is a bacterial infection that spreads to the deeper layers of the skin, causing severe cystic acne. It can spread to cause inflammation without the need for a pimple head.

4. Acne cysts are pimples that appear as large red raised bumps. Inside are cavities with pus mixed with blood caused by severe inflammation under the skin. Cystic acne is the most painful type of acne. It is acne with multiple pimple heads clustered together into a hard kidney and can grow larger. If left untreated, it can become chronic acne, scarring, or large acne pits.
